I’m part of a great administrative staff. “Him being here was actually one of the things that attracted me to coming to Glenbard East. “We talk football all the time,” Hulbert says. Bates also played for the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings. Bates starred at wide receiver at Northwestern in the mid-to-late 1990s, helping to lead the Wildcats to consecutive Big Ten titles in 19, and an appearance in the 1996 Rose Bowl. One of Hulbert’s administrative co-workers happens to be D’Wayne Bates, the school’s athletic director. Hulbert still follows football, and it’s certainly a regular topic of conversation at Glenbard East. We basically help feed children in need as well as build relationships so when those young people transition here, they have someone they can depend on.”
It’s more of a big brother, big sister type program. “We talk about academics, we talk about social issues. “We do monthly mentoring over there, working with eighth graders,” he says. Hulbert is in charge of a mentorship program where he takes a group of Glenbard East students over to Marquardt Middle School in Glendale Heights, one of the high school’s larger feeder schools. I couldn’t be happier.”Īs one of four deans at Glenbard East, Hulbert says he and his colleagues are responsible for “the well-being of all students.” “We deal with attendance issues, social-emotional issues, we assist families with various issues, we have different community programs,” he says. I’ve had hundreds of boys … my players are my boys and God blessed me with some girls. “People often tease me about trying for a boy, but I have enough boys. “Words can’t express the joy that they’ve brought to my life,” says Hulbert, who recently started his third year at Glenbard East, which has an enrollment of around 2,200 students. He has two little girls: Stella, who’s almost 2, and Nina, five months. But he’s certainly enjoying his new roles these days-as a dean of students at Glenbard East High School in Lombard … and as a father.
